Thyroid cancer is one of the fastest spreading forms of cancer in USA and as many as 20,000 new cases are reported every year. The females have more chances of having this form of cancer and the ratio for male to female patients stands at 3:1. Thyroid cancer usually occurs in the age group of 30 and above. In most cases the symptoms of cancer are not present and most people do not detect it till a later stage when the damage is already done. Some of the symptoms of thyroid cancer are hoarseness and pain in the neck, enlarged lymph nodes.
The different types of thyroid cancer are papillary or mixed papillary cancer, follicular cancer, medullary cancer and anaplastic cancer. Of all these types of thyroid cancers papillary cancer is the most common ones. Most of forms of thyroid cancers are completely curable. Papillary and follicular cancers can be cured simply by removing the infected lobes and as these are the most common forms of thyroid cancer most people are cured. These two forms of thyroid cancers are the most common curable cancers.
A medullary cancer though uncommon spread in the infected area and requires proper surgery and is not as curable as the other two forms of thyroid cancers. Anaplastic cancer is the most uncommon forms of thyroid cancers and it is difficult to remove this form of cancer even after a surgery.
One of the main reasons why this form of cancer is easily curable is because the thyroid gland uses the maximum amount of iodine and this makes it easy during chemotherapy for radiation to target this gland and kill the cancer causing cells. Radioactive Iodine is given to patients with thyroid cancer which is absorbed by the gland which is poisonous and helps destroy the cells without causing any pain or problems. All this is done after surgery to make sure no traces of the cancer is left in the gland after surgery. However this is not needed for all patients. Radioactive iodine therapy is totally safe and has every minute or no side affects.
Thyroid cancer is one of the most easily curable forms of cancer and can be diagnosed by physicians easily by simple tests. It is always best that one does proper test and takes proper treatment after detection of the cancer and it will be cured and you can live a normal life after the treatment is done.
