With all this news in the air about swine flu, one of the first things that goes on through the mind when people come down with a little fever or the sniffles is to worry about how to find out if they have the swine flu or not. The symptoms of swine flu unfortunately, tend to be ambiguous in their import. When people read up on the symptoms of the swine flu, they make up a mental picture of what it must feel like to have those symptoms; and they remember this image for a time when they might need to gauge their symptoms. All that they get for their bother though, is anxiety every time there is a little cough or cold; in truth, nothing can prepare you for how terrible the body ache and the sickening fever of the real swine flu swine flu feel. You just know what you have.
As it happens, swine flu requires proper support for a testing for real confirmation. The symptoms of swine flu are not all that different from those of normal flu. The regular flu usually brings along a fever, sore throat, nasal congestion and a cough, all the symptoms of a proper respiratory illness. People feel sickened and complain of a body ache. The difference in swine flu is that all these symptoms of regular influenza are accompanied with the additional indicators of diarrhea or nausea. Now apart from children, no one really gets nauseous or gets the runs for the regular influenza; so these additional symptoms are gaining in reliability as clues that there might be swine flu involved.
People always wonder if it is necessary to go check oneself into a hospital for swine flu. The vulnerable, children and the old, should always seek medical attention the moment something out of the ordinary is noticed. So should people who have other medical problems to battle, heart disease, diabetes or cancer, when they see that they have symptoms of a serious influenza. It would not hurt to err on the side of caution though, for all people to consider paying their doctor a quick visit if any symptoms that should show up. What really matters is the state of health you happen to be in; swine flu or other flu, if you happen to be getting worse every day, with a fever and a cough, a visit is always in order.
Here are some of the signs that swine flu infection requires emergency treatment.
- In children, the following signs require emergency attention
- Extreme irritability in a child that results in an unwillingness to be held.
- Labored breathing
- Unhealthy skin pallor: bluish or grayish tones on the skin.
- Repeated vomiting.
- Unwillingness to take in fluids.
In adults, signs that call for emergency attention are:
- Disorientation
- Alarming bouts of vomiting.
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pains and abdomen pains
- The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a great swine flu bulletin board on its website if you wish to keep up with everything that’s happening.
